The internet is transforming the way we do business. With the depressed global economy, high unemployment and financial collapse; internet marketing has become a viable option for most.
Marketing any type of site on the internet involves more than building a website and hoping for the best. It involves strategy centered around SEO and SEM.
The core of internet marketing is keywords. Some of your best planning should center around extensive keyword research.
Not all keywords are created equal. The temptation is to grab short tail key words also known as market keywords. It should be noted that pursing hyper competitive keywords is probably not the best use of your time.
Going after highly competitive keywords is a long shot; unless you have substantial resources.
Most savvy internet marketers go for a mixture of long tail keywords that are based on various traffic/competetion factors. Ideally, you want to pick high traffic keywords which have an acceptable level of competetion.
Picking the right keywords can be done by using various keyword research tools. Some of the best research tools are free, including some of the leading search engine search tools.
One of my favorite keyword search tools is “Market Samurai” out of Australia. There are tools like “Market Samurai” that include research on SEO competetion data like page rank, backlinks, anchor text, domain age, cache date and other relevant factors like directory submissions.
An important fact to keep in mind when you pick keywords is relevancy. Don’t be tempted to pick high traffic keywords that have nothing to do with your site as this might get you a bad quality score with the search engines.
You need to keep your audience in mind at all times and focus on delivering high value relevant content first. The other strategies of internet marketing like SEO need to be secondary.
Are you needing more traffic to your website? Do you wonder why you have a beautiful site but no traffic? There may be a few problems that you are having but more than likely you have the wrong keywords.
Some people make the mistake of going after high traffic short tail keywords. The problem with this strategy is that you might end up on the second, third or fourth page of the search. This alone could kill your traffic and it’s not the best strategy for building a online business.
Try to focus on a few keywords at a time so that you can put some efforts behind submission and link building. Remember the success of your online business starts with laying a good foundation. Research is your priority in picking the best keywords for your business.
Happy keyword hunting!
