Internet Marketing Vs. Digital Marketing


So the online world is growing and it consist of Internet marketing, digital marketing and social media. Most have their favorites but being a online strategist, I tend to think that all the pieces of the online puzzle are related.

The key to online success is understanding where your target market is and where it isn’t! Most newbie Internet marketers are obsessed with traffic but is web traffic the same or equal? Not for a minute. Understanding your keywords and the search behavior of your target market is key!

I recently did a webinar for a group of marketers in the U.K. called “The Big Rocks of SEO!” I wanted to educate this group of marketers on the priority of keyword research as it relates to mapping out your market. I was happy to do the webinar with my friend a well known marketer in the U.K. by the name of Mr. William Debauchez from Internet Coaching Circle.  I guess that you can say that William is an Internet or Digital marketing online success coach!

What is the difference between Digital Marketing and Internet Marketing

The short answer is : Social Media. The longer answer is: Corporate Acceptance Let me explain.

Internet Marketing has been around for 5 to 10 years now. It consists of using the internet to find an audience, performing research to offer relevant offers to that audience. In many cases, internet marketers don’t have a product for that audience themselves, but search affiliate networks such as Clickbank to satisfy their prospects.

Of course there are other forms of internet marketing, but the idea very often revolves around that. Because of the intense competition experienced in lucrative affiliate marketing niches, Internet Marketers have come to use a variety of tools and techniques to establish a competitive advantage.

Companies that have a product to sell have been using similar techniques as they became available, and have done so for a long time. But for some reason, they have not admitted to performing “Internet Marketing”. That word just seemed too…home based. Instead, they’d say that they use information technology, or, create an online platform, or a combination of words that rarely fell back on Internet Marketing.

And then Social Media happened.  Something larger companies could hang their hat on, have meetings about and strategize with. And many of them have done brilliantly well with it.  They soon realized they had to integrate social within their marketing and IT infrastructure, and use more and more online tools that belong to the Internet Marketing world. And the word Digital started to arrive.

I first heard about the term Digital Marketing in March 2010, and when that happened, I thought of digital print and photography rather than of social media and internet marketing.  Digital Marketing is now a well accepted term, used to refer the intersection of social media, communication, media, information technologies and, of course internet marketing.  I recommend listening to the For Immediate Release Podcast by Shel Hotz and Neville Hobson, and regularly visiting the Internet Coaching Circle, where you can find course, coaching and done for you digital marketing services.

SEO/Search Engine Marketing

Okay, so William has created an interesting conversation around digital marketing.  It is so true that an intersection of social media, SEO, Internet marketing and other media has changed the playing field for many businesses.    All of these mediums can be leveraged with the proper online strategy!  Never forget, that keyword research is the foundation for all of these things!  If you want to learn more about leveraging the Internet with the right strategy then you must get this keyword research thing down.
